Weather: Cost: $ varies

 Weather – November 2, 2010 - March 1, 2011

Each year, the waters of the eastern Atlantic spawn tropical storms that mature into hurricanes by the time they reach the Caribbean. If you are unfortunate enough to be boating just to the right of a typical hurricane storm track, your boat would be getting torn apart by winds up to 150 knots. Where do hurricanes originate? How do they fuel their own growth and development? If you found yourself boating in the path of a hurricane, is there anything you can do?

This course is about violent weather like hurricanes, tornadoes and thunderstorms. It is also about what produces pleasant, boating weather. More than anything else, this course is about helping you to understand some of the many variables that produce the whole range of weather phenomena we experience as boaters. It’s about learning to use good sources of weather information. And it’s about providing you with the tools you need to observe, interpret and forecast the weather from your own boat.

Topics include: Structure of the atmosphere; climate, wind and pressure; effects of terrain; storms and fronts; rain, humidity and fog; thunderstorms and tornados; tropical weather; clouds; forecasting; and much, much more!

If you’re still forecasting the weather by reciting, “Red sky at night, sailor’s delight,” then this course is for you. In fact, the Weather course is a must for all boaters on all kinds of water!

If you want to take the Weather class contact the instructor – Fred Petillo at 257-3187 or by E-mail at fred@thepetillos.net as soon as possible. If there are not enough students signed up the class will be cancelled.  Please do not use the on line registration button.

Class price has not yet been determined but should be near $150.  Note – prices for all classes include a 1 year individual membership in the Madison Sail and Power Squadron. Prices are slightly higher for a family membership. Prices are substantially discounted for existing members.

Piloting: Cost: $ varies

Piloting will be offered beginning 3 March 2011 and end 5 May 2011

The emphasis of this class is on using charts and GPS for planning a cruise and safely navigating your boat. You will learn to use charts, aids to navigations such as buoys and lighthouses, and electronic assistance such as GPS to plan and monitor your course. Classic piloting techniques such as taking and plotting bearings to determine your position are taught as backup methods. If you have not had piloting or you had the old course and you boat anywhere more challenging than a small local lake you should consider taking Piloting. If you plan to take Piloting please contact Lt/C David Miran, SN, at 274-0765 (or demiran@wisc.edu) as soon as possible.

The class cost of $145 includes a one year single membership in MSPS.  Family memberships cost slightly more.  Current members get substantial discounts.  Please do not register on-line - contact the instructor.
